Florence City Break Guide – beauty, art and that bridge

I can pin point the exact moment my obsession with Florence began. I was sat in my A Level English Literature class reading A Room With A View. The fight scene at the Neptune Fountain was being discussed, and Florence felt so vibrant, so real to me that I could quite literally place myself in the scene.

I could feel it and I could taste it and I wanted in so badly.

That it took me 16 years to get there is by the by. My Mum and I had promised each other that we’d visit it together and it took that long for us to get our act together. I avoided Italian holidays for 16 long years because I’d promised myself that Florence would be my first destination in Italy and when the day finally I came, I couldn’t contain my excitement.

But did Florence stack up to the dream I’d created for myself? (Spoiler: it did).

A guide to great gelato in Rome

As beer is to the Czech Republic, gelato is to Italy. A staple, something you’ll find on every street in every Italian city in the world. It’s smooth, it’s delicious and whilst gelato is the Italian word for ice cream, there are some key differences in the two.

As part of my trip to Rome I took upon myself to find out more about gelato – how it’s made, how to spot good stuff from bad and most importantly, where to find the best gelato in Rome.

It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to do it!

The ultimate foodies guide to Rome

Honestly, Italy is a place where all my foodie dreams come true. Amazing pizza, simple and delicious pasta, anti-pasti for days, prosecco on tap and the much famed aperitivo time make this the ultimate food and drink based destination for me.

But like many huge cities, especially ones that attract millions of tourists each year, it can be hard to find the really good stuff. Don’t worry – I ate a lot of food on my recent trip to Rome and I’ve got a complete Foodies Guide to this amazing city.

Naples City Guide – the craziest place in Italy?

I’ll be honest. Naples was never on my list of places to visit, particularly in Italy. I haven’t seen Milan OR Venice yet, and I’m also super keen to visit Bologna and Perugia. But, I found myself planning the last stop of our Italian road trip to be Naples.

You see, I really really really wanted to visit Pompeii and Naples seemed like a sensible place to base ourselves in for this endeavour (you can also base yourself in Sorrento, but due to the time of year we wanted to stick firmly to city options). But was I just writing off Naples as nothing more than a stop gap? Turns out, I totally was.

Rome City Guide – exploring and understanding an ancient city

Rome has been on my wish list for a while – and why wouldn’t it be? Some of the most iconic buildings and monuments in Europe, let alone just Italy, a history that’s only befitting of the World’s third oldest city and all the freaking gelato. It would have been so easy for me to plan a weekend away to Rome, but Italy as a whole eluded me until my trip to Florence in 2016 and so its the case that I got to 34 without ever seeing the Coliseum, or The Vatican with my own eyes.

But once I’d spent even only a day in Florence I was determined to see more of Italy, and watching Rome through the eyes of Dan Brown films just wouldn’t cut it anymore. When planning our Italian road trip, Rome was the first destination we decided upon, and it was also the place we stayed in longest.

Question is, would it live up to the hype, or would Rome with all its architecture and history and crazy feel like one big tourist trap?
