This was my paradise for 10 whole days, back in 2011 when I was desperate to just switch off and listen to the waves. I’m no stranger to this particular beach, having honeymooned there in 2009 with Mr S, and I can assure you it is as relaxing and picturesque as the photo shows. Pure bliss. We spent 10 days this time at the gorgeous Sensimar Seaside Suites resort in Kantenah, and quite frankly I didn’t want to come home!
Situated on its own private beach about an hour down the coast from Cancun, this little hideaway is an adults only couples resort with fine dining as standard (they call it “Gourmet Inclusive”), an extensive cocktail list, spa and beach loungers made up to look like four poster double beds. Some of them even swing in the cool sea breeze. With five restaurants (Asian, Italian, Mexican, International and a Garden Grill), two pools, four bars and impeccable service, I felt like the luckiest girl in the world to return to my honeymoon destination.
We were very thoughtfully housed in the same room as when we visited in 2009, a quietly placed swim up suite with our own plunge pool right off our terrace and a double jacuzzi bath. On arrival, we were given a classic tropical cocktail to enjoy (the first of many), and off to our room we went to enjoy the last of the daylight hours in our private swim up pool. Just as an aside, swim up rooms are more expensive and you can absolutely enjoy this hotel and every other without one. However, sometimes it was really nice to be able to roll out of bed onto the terrace undisturbed and in peace and quiet. The hotel did room service as part of its All Inclusive deal, so in this room you genuinely didn’t need to go anywhere. Luxurious and ridiculous.
But venture away from our room we did. We spent our days largely lounging either on the beach or around the pool, sipping cocktails and splashing about in the sea with the lovely friendly fishes. As we had visited most of the main cultural sites on our last visit, the whole point of this holiday was pure relaxation and recharging. And recharge those tired batteries we did! A little bit of snorkling, Zumba and yoga aside I spent the majority of my 10 days laying down, sleeping or perching at the swim up bar or swing bar as above. I’m not lying when I say there was a cocktail to match every outfit I had, and if there was something I wanted that wasn’t on the list the bartenders would give it a bloody good go.
Alternatively you could ask for a “surprise”, but that way leads to very very delicate mornings.
In the evenings, we were treated to five courses, a limitless supply of wine and some of the best restaurant service I have ever experienced. The steak was to die for, as was the authentic Mexican cuisine, as you would expect. And as I expected from my last visit – the guacamole. Well. I will never buy shop bought again, because this stuff was The Real Deal. After dinner, a few drinks, a little dancing on the beach and then sleeping ready to do it all over again!
There were and are a handful of downsides about this hotel that it is only fair to be honest about. First of all, it sits on a man-made beach. This isn’t massively unusual for hurricane exposed Mexico, but if a natural and extremely large beach is for you, then it is worth searching for another hotel in the area. It’s also quite far from downtown Cancun – that suited us perfectly as we were not that interested in bar hopping and big nights out, but of you are looking for a party, a hotel closer to Cancun or Playa Del Carmen may be more suitable.
All in all, we had an absolute ball. The Sensimar Seaside Suites is a perfect hotel for honeymooners, those on their anniversary holidays and everything in between. A good spread of ages and a romantic setting makes this hotel the perfect pick for a special occasion, and if you are inclined to explore it’s perfectly placed on the Yucatan Peninsula – Chichen Itza, Tulum and Cozumel are all on your doorstep.
Have you ever splashed out on a seriously lux hotel?
