How to fit a life of travel around a full time job

The wonderful Sophie Cliff and I joked recently that if there were such a job as “professional city breaker”, we’d really like to interview for it.

It’s not like I don’t love my job. I do. And I have flexible bosses, a generous holiday allowance and a decent enough salary to be able to take trips every now and then. But it doesn’t stop me wondering how I can possibly see all I want to see within the confines of a full time job.

I’m making a pretty good stab of it at the moment, and thought I’d share my top trips for satisfying wanderlust when you have a full time job.

Since I started travelling more regularly last year, I’ve started to try to find little ways to make my life easier, my trips more fulfilling and my money go further. Until recently I was an appalling traveller – always checked my baggage because I just couldn’t get my head around the liquid rules, left currency until the last-minute and packed way more than I need. But as I’ve become more practised, I’ve started to travel smarter and I wanted to share some of the more unusual ways I “hack my travel”.

I’m a sucker for a bargain, and when there are just so many places I want to visit in the world I have to hunt down deals and book smart. A cheap city break is much easier to book than a long haul holiday, and because you are only away for a couple of nights the risk is much lower.

That said, a cheap city break doesn’t have to be all shared bathroom and lumpy mattress. Over the years I’ve managed to score nights in some of the most luxurious hotels in Europe simply because I’ve been savvy about where and how I’ve booked them.
