Looking for a job is never easy, and it’s the kind of thing that a lot of people dread having to deal with. Sadly, it’s also something that you’re almost always going to have to deal with at some point in your life. Whether you’ve suddenly lost your job or you find yourself looking for something a little more fulfilling to do with your time, you’re going to have to apply for at least a few jobs throughout your life. With that in mind, here are some things that you can do to make the entire experience as painless as possible.

Keeping your CV up to date

Having a clear, well written and formatted CV that shows your accomplishments and qualifications is one of the most important parts of any application process, but one of the most common mistakes that people make is that they don’t bother to keep their CV up to date until they actually need it. When that happens, they suddenly have to spend a huge amount of their time trying to update it and get it ready to send out. If it’s already up to date, then all you need to worry about is tailoring it a little bit to each specific job that you’re applying for.

Know what employers want to see in an application

Your CV might show employers that you’re qualified for the job, but it’s the cover letter that really lets them know whether or not you’re the person that they want to hire. Knowing how to write a cover letter that’s really going to wow a prospective employer can be something of a skill that not everyone has right away. Luckily there are plenty of resources available online that can help you not only write well but tailor your cover letter to the specific place that you’re applying to so that you can grab their attention from the very first line.

Don’t hide your head in the sand

One of the biggest mistakes that a lot of people make when it comes to applying for jobs is to try and hide their heads in the sand and ignore the whole process as much as possible. It shouldn’t really come as much of a shock that this never works out well. If the idea of applying for jobs is something you find incredibly daunting, then the very best things that you can do is just to get it out of the way as soon as possible. That way, not only can you carry on with your life without having to think about it, but it’ll be that much sooner that the entire process is over.

Of course, none of these things are going automatically take all of the stress out of applying for jobs. Sadly the process of applying and interviewing is always going to be one that presents a lot of different challenges. However, being as prepared and ready as possible is the best way to be sure that you’re able to handle these things as well as possible and greatly increase your chances of being able to get the job that you’re working so hard applying for.
